Flomax is the trade name for the prescription medication Tamsulosin. It is classified as a selective alpha blocker and is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. This medication was developed by Yamanouchi Pharmaceuticals and is now marketed by a variety of companies. Flomax is offered in both standard and extended release formulas. In 2009 the patent on Flomax expired and in 2010 it became available as a generic, making it more affordable and more accessible to a larger demographic.
Flomax is a selective receptor antagonist that is specific for the receptor in the prostate instead of the receptor in the blood vessels. As such, it is used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia but it is often prescribed in the treatment of kidney stones as it works as a smooth muscle relaxant and allows for easier passage of kidney stones, allowing for most stones to pass without the need for surgery.
Like all medications currently on the market today, Flomax has the potential to cause some unintended side effects. These side effects may range from one patient to another and patients should discuss concerns with their doctor as they arise. Some patients will develop a reaction to Flomax much like they would if they had an allergy to sulfa based drugs. Additionally, those who are taking Flomax may develop a condition known as floppy iris syndrome if they have to have cataract surgery. Those who need to have this surgery while taking Flomax should tell their doctor that they are taking this medication ahead of time to help avoid any adverse reactions. In some instances Flomax has also affected sexual function in men. It may cause retrograde ejaculation, which can be quite painful. It may also be associated with drastic drops in blood pressure which can cause dizziness or fainting. Other less serious side effects include nasal congestion, headache, and light headedness.
